TODAY IS: The anniversary of the Great Blizzard of '88 (1888, that is), which blanketed the Northeast U.S. with 40 to 50 inches of snow, buffeted the region with gale-force winds, and left snowdrifts as high as 40 feet and more than 400 dead in its wake. Killer snow figures in 1980's THE SHINING, based on Stephen King's novel. Is writer Jack Nicholson haunted by ghosts in the remote, snowbound hotel of which he is the caretaker, or is he driven to hunt down his wife and child by his own lunacy? |
