TODAY IS: The first day of Deaf History Month, which runs through April 15, encompassing the anniversaries of the 1817 founding of the first American public school for the deaf, the 1864 presidential charter that allowed deaf students to receive college degrees, and the 1988 posting of a deaf president to Gallaudet University (see librarydeaf.com for more info). The 1996 German film BEYOND SILENCE explores some of the issues that face the deaf and the hearing who love them, revolving around a hearing girl who, having been the ears to the world for her deaf parents, now leaves them to become a musician.
