ON THIS DAY: In 1989, an enormous asteroid passed within 500,000 miles of Earth, close enough for NASA to classify it as a near-miss -- had it struck Earth, it would have left a crater the size of Washington, DC. The big rock doesn't fly by harmlessly in 1998's DEEP IMPACT -- it hits square on, raising a continent-swallowing tsunami, but not before it induces much soul searching and wallowing in angst among its all-star cast. |
