ON THIS DAY: In 1937, the German airship Hindenburg, having just completed a transatlantic flight, exploded as it was landing at an airfield in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 of the 97 passengers and crew aboard. For one of the most infamous disasters in aviation history, the dirigible's story is all but ignored by filmdom -- 1975's THE HINDENBURG, starring George C. Scott and Anne Bancroft, is one of the very few films to deal with the incident. |
