ON THIS DAY: In 1888, songwriter Irving Berlin was born in Russia (he moved to New York when he was 4 years old, and died there more than a century later in 1989). Though he could neither write nor read musical notation, he composed some of the most beloved of American standards, including "God Bless America" and the favorite holiday tune "White Christmas," which was featured in the 1942 musical HOLIDAY INN, sung by its most famous crooner, Bing Crosby. |
