ON THIS DAY: In 1847, the odometer was invented by Mormon pioneer William Clayton, who wanted a reliable way to keep track of the mileage wagons racked up crossing the Great Plains. The miles are long, arduous, and hilarious in 1988's road comedy MIDNIGHT RUN, in which Robert DeNiro's bounty hunter races to bring bailjumper Charles Grodin crosscountry from New York to Los Angeles by any vehicle necessary, from bus to train to stolen plane. |
