TODAY IS: Armed Forces Day. While each branch of the U.S. military formerly celebrated its own day, in 1950 the first Armed Forces Day was observed to commemorate the unification of the military under the Department of Defense. The day probably isn't meant to pay tribute to the kind of military life Bill Murray and friends lead in the 1981 comedy STRIPES, which involves lots of partying as well as theft and misuse of Army equipment.
