ON THIS DAY: In 1927, Charles Lindbergh completed his historic flight across the Atlantic Ocean, landing in Paris 33 hours after taking off from Long Island, the first person to accomplish this feat alone. James Stewart portrays the aviator in the 1957 biopic THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS -- the film is named, of course, after the plane in which Lindbergh took his heroic flight. |
