ON THIS DAY: In 1959, the hockey mask was invented by Montreal Canadiens goalie Jacque Plante, who was tired of stopping pucks with his face -- he made his plastic face mask with fiberglass and resin. The goalie of the pee-wee hockey team in 1992's Disney comedy THE MIGHTY DUCKS could have words of thanks for Plante: he is terrified of playing goalie until the stopping power of the protective mask makes him fearless. |
