ON THIS DAY: In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first animal into space, a dog named Laika, aboard Sputnik 2. The ship was not designed to return to Earth, and the dog died when her air supply ran out. The preadolescent hero of 1985's MY LIFE AS A DOG is haunted by the fate of Laika, which becomes a metaphor for his awkward coming of age. |
