ON THIS DAY: In 1922, the tomb of the Egyptian king Tutankhamen was discovered in Luxor, Egypt, by English archeologist Howard Carter, more than 3000 years after Tut's death. The tomb, one of the most important archeological discoveries of modern times, is the only ancient Egyptian tomb known to have escape plundering. This was surely the inspiration for 1932's THE MUMMY, in which mysterious and magically powerful items unearthed at an Egyptian archeological dig lead to deadly consequences. |
