ON THIS DAY: In 1951, regional area codes were introduced, which would, by 1960, allow all telephone customers in the U.S., Canada, and most of the Caribbean to make direct long-distance telephone calls. The telephone plays a huge part in the scheme by Ray Milland to kill his wife, played by Grace Kelly, in the 1954 thriller DIAL "M" FOR MURDER, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. |
