ON THIS DAY: In 1945, the Nuremberg war crimes trial began in Berlin with indictments against 24 former Nazi leaders. One defendant committed suicide during the trial, and another was excused because of his poor physical and mental condition -- when the trial ended ten months later, 19 of the remaining defendants were convicted, and three acquitted. The trail was dramatized in last year's TV mini-series NUREMBERG, starring Alec Baldwin as the lead American prosecutor. |
