ON THIS DAY: In 1809, Fannie Kemble was born in London, England (she died there in 1893). One of the most famous actresses of her day, Kemble came to America with a touring theatrical production and stayed to become one of the foremost abolitionists -- though, ironically, one of the least known anti-slavery activists today. Her story is told in last year's compelling and disturbing ENSLAVEMENT: THE TRUE STORY OF FANNY KEMBLE. |
