TODAY IS: The first day of Mystery Series Week, a celebration of continuing characters in mystery fiction -- such as Sherlock Holmes, Brother Cadfael, and Inspector Morse -- held annually during the first week of October (for more info, see www.mysteryseriesweek.com). While series detectives have done well on television, few have survived a transfer to the big screen. One failed attempt is 1991's V.I. WARSHAWSKI, starring Kathleen Turner as best-selling author Sara Paretsky's private eye.
