ON THIS DAY: In 1904, the New York City subway debuted, a single, privately owned line that ran from City Hall, in lower Manhattan, to West 145th Street in Harlem. A less auspicious day in the history of mass transit would "occur" 70 years later, when hijackers seize a subway car and hold the passengers for ransom in the 1974 thriller THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE, starring Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau. |
