ON THIS DAY: In 1846 (probably), the several groups of Westward pioneers collectively known as the Donner Party set up camp in a pass of the Sierra Nevada. Already hampered by bad weather, Indian attacks, and a lack of food, the travelers would be snowbound for months, and would resort to cannibalism in the face of severe famine. Obviously inspired by this infamous footnote in American history is the 1999 thriller/black comedy RAVENOUS, about an army fort in the Sierras in 1847 that succumbs to cannibalism. |
