ON THIS DAY: In 1938, Orson Welles and his Mercury Players presented their WAR OF THE WORLDS radio drama, which convinced many listeners, via simulated newscasts, that Martians had invaded New Jersey. History repeated itself in 1983, when the made-for-TV movie SPECIAL BULLETIN -- about terrorists threatening to explode a nuclear weapon in Charleston, South Carolina -- convinced many viewers that the fictional story, presented in news-bulletin style, was real, despite numerous disclaimers. |
