ON THIS DAY: In 1781, the city of Los Angeles was founded -- its full name was decreed as "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles de Porniuncula," which loosely translated apparently means "City of Automobiles and Silicone Destined to Fall into the Pacific." Steve Martin captures the cheerful bizarreness and hidden numinousness of the city in his charming romantic comedy L.A. STORY, perhaps the only film that could be called a Valentine to Los Angeles. |
