ON THIS DAY: In 1947, the U.S. Air Force was established, becoming a separate service from the Army, of which it was formerly a part. Which led directly to one of the touchstone films of the 80s: 1986's TOP GUN, in which Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Edwards portray hot-shot fighter pilots who vie to defy death and get chicks.
