ON THIS DAY: In 1920, the Black Sox 8 were indicted -- eight players from the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. The case was a national scandal, and though the players were later acquitted, they were banned from baseball for life. Filmmaker John Sayles told the story of the players on film in the wonderful 1988 drama EIGHT MEN OUT, one of the best baseball movies ever made. |
