ON THIS DAY: In 1829, the first officers of London's Metropolitan Police took to the streets of the city, to jeering disapproval from both the public and much of the political establishment. In later year, Scotland Yard -- the force takes its official name from the site of its first headquarters -- earned the city's trust. The (fictional) gentlemen detective Sherlock Holmes never had much respect for the Yard, though. The root of that feeling may be found in the 1970 drama THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, in which writer/director Billy Wilder explored his complicated character.
