trailer break: ‘Kites’

Take a break from work: watch a trailer…

Huh. I didn’t know Quentin Tarantino had gone to Bollywood. Where’ Uma Thurman?

Seriously, though: This film is the big push to get mainstream North American audiences into Bollywood movies. The film is being released on the same day in India as it is around the world, including North America and the U.K. The tailer does make it look at least as Hollywood as it does Bollywood — kissing? in an Indian film? I guess it’s okay because the girl isn’t Indian? — so perhaps it’ll have a shot at crossing over…

Kites opens in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. on May 21.

Hrithik Roshan is a huge Bollywood star. I’ve seen a couple of his movies, which look awfully hokey to my Western eyes, but are monster hits in India, like Dhoom 2. If they can curb a substantial amount of the standard-issue Bollywood cheese — keep the seven-minute dance breaks to a minimum, for starters — this may have a really solid chance of crossing over. I mean, look at the guy. Even I have to admit, he’s pretty dreamy.
