47 Ronin trailer: I do loves me some Keanu…

Well, the dialogue is hopelessly clichéd — “I’m not afraid”/”You should be” — but this looks kind of amazing. And I like how the fantasy stuff sneaks up on you; this seems at first as if it’s gonna be a purely historical film, and then comes the dragon and the giant beast thing.

I admit I might be stretching for stuff to like here.

Hollywood can take a story in any place or time in history and still find a way to make it star a white guy (I know Keanu is part Asian, but this still looks like whitewashing to me). Between that, the hulking monster Asians, and a literal dragon lady, there’s some pretty racist shit in here.

Yeah, “literal dragon lady”. Looks like lovely CGI, but they needed different “I”.

Aside from that, there’s a real legend about 47 ronin that has nothing to do with magic or otherworldlyness. But, it probably wouldn’t translate well to a blockbuster as the main theme of the legend is bushido.

And, edited again to say, Mr. Reeves is easy on the eyes and I hear he’s a pleasure to work with on a set, but he is the last person I want to see carrying a film. He is the least expressive big actor I know of. Even Bruce Willis with his recent apparent facial paralysis is more expressive. The one time I felt Reeves was expressive was when I saw Speed dubbed into Spanish. Spanish actors know how to add drama.

This looks like Tom Cruise’s “The Last Samurai” meets “300” and “The Seven Samurai.” This really looks like a dopey video game mess of a movie. I didn’t realize until the trailer that the reference to the magnificent story of the 47 Ronin was a sad attempt to hijack a story that doesn’t need this kind of reboot.

Unless I hear that this is a hidden gem, I will probably skip this movie.

Yeah, to me this trailer says “Dances With Samurai 2: now with a younger actor”. Will avoid unless the reviews are amazing.
