Even Joseph Fiennes might be a better choice than Zosia Mamet to play Patti Smith.

I’ve always found Matt Smith to look vaguely creepy – clearly this is not a universal reaction to him – so I reckon he’s an ideal choice to play an artist whom was often regarded as being a bit dodgy.
I always looked at his work and saw him as showing exquisite beauty in people and emotions that the ‘establishment’ found abhorrent (unless they were indulging in them, but wouldn’t admit to it).
Some people liked Matt Smith as the Doctor in part because he looked genuinely alien. I was one of them. That quality may also work for Mapplethorpe. Or not.
