I was asked to recommend some comics for my eight-year-old nephew and realized that a lot of the best stories were about girls. So I’m hopeful—if not at all confident—that in a generation or so, both boys and girls will be reading stories about Lilly and Olivia and Moon Girl and Zita the Spacegirl and Rey and hundreds of characters who haven’t been invented yet.

  • “The best stories are about girls” =/= “most stories are about girls.”

Most children’s books are not about girls, QED. But I’m glad that Marvel and DC and other publishers are working very visibly to change that. It will be interesting to see what kinds of stories are written by the girls and boys who grow up reading about Ms. Marvel and Supergirl and Mirka from Hereville and Delilah Dirk.
