It seems to me that the press — and the public — simply has to stop expecting any useful or enlightening information to come out of Trump’s mouth. There’s nothing he can say, whether crude or polite or sensible or outrageous, that he can’t later reverse or deny ever saying. Nothing. You can’t have a meaningful press conference with Trump any more than you can have a meaningful press conference with a hurricane.

So stop playing his game. The press’s task now, I’d say, is simply to report on his administration’s actions, and to hammer home the consequences of those actions. You don’t need to interview a hurricane to report on its damage, and you don’t need to interview a dictator to document how his regime hurts the country.
