    Yup, Google wanted to be the monopoly provider of obscure books, by taking them out of circulation for destructive scanning. No way that could have gone wrong.

  • The books weren’t destroyed: they went back to the library they were borrowed from.

    Ah, right – that seems to have been a later proposal when people objected to the first one. Thanks. So it would only have been that Google knew who was reading every book at all times.
