Everybody I’ve brought this up to, even sane people, in person first ask what he was doing. Their go-to assumption is that he somehow was being ‘inappropriately aggressive’ and that the enforcers *must* have been justified.

I guess they’ve never watched reporters in action?

I think it’s that a lot of people are still in denial about what kind of country we’re in. When journalists are jailed in third-world dictatorships, we have no hesitation in thinking that it’s about cracking down on freedom of the press. But here? “No, it couldn’t possibly happen here, we’re different! We’re special! If a journalist was arrested, there must be some other acceptable reason.” I fear that a lot of our illusions are going to be shattered, more than they have been already.

What the hell is happening to me? I used to be such an optimist on these threads. This site (or life) has broken me.

I have to admit that my first response was to wonder if the journalist was creating some sort of disruption or violating security protocols. Any previous administration would have made an attempt at plausible deniability. This administration doesn’t care.

When I saw that there were no women on the committee in charge of health care laws, I thought: You’d think they’d find one woman, somewhere, just for the sake of public relations. Then I realized: A significant portion of their base thinks this is exactly the way things should be, an bunch of white men running the world.

We just have to think how this would look to us if it were happening in Nicaragua
