He’s literally playing a Russian man on Agents of Shield right now. Other characters actually call him “the Russian guy”.

Can his descendants sue for misrepresentation? I mean, this is story about something that happened not that long ago. there must still be family and I would think there is some right they could have under law about representation… of course, the moviemakers would claim it is “art” and therefore exempt from this I suppose.
“Until there is an Hawaiian movie star to play such a role, we are forced to use this alleged movie star (who 99% of the people on this planet wouldn’t know from Adam) who just happens to be white. In the meantime, we’ll keep working to ensure that there never is an Hawaiian movie star.”
I’m preparing my eyeroll in advance:

Literally the whitest dude. Did no one question this upstairs?
If “upstairs” is all white dudes, then I’m not surprised that no one did.
Clueless white privilege strikes again.

I was afraid that was going to be a defense!
Nope! Apparently, though, Zach McGowan’s relatives are out defending him on Twitter. Jeff Yang responds to one of them in this thread:

*sigh*

They could have cast Jason Momoa, who IS a Hawaiian movie star (born in Hawaii and half Native Hawaiian).
Filmmakers: “But Momoa looks nothing like Ben Kanahele!”
Me (after cracking a rib laughing): “Oh, and you think Zach McGowan does?”
Man, this shit is continuing to hit the fan.
