And with men, it’s not even seen as “taking a huge gamble” so much as simply “how this whole thing works.” It’s pretty obvious that, before you are given your first big-budget film, you haven’t directed a big-budget film. Working at a certain level and then being trusted with bigger projects and more responsibility: sounds like a normal career trajectory to me, in any field. And yet all this fearfulness and nervousness when (gasp!) it’s a woman who takes that step.
