God, The Devil and Bob (review)

The creators of this extremely short-lived animated NBC series would love to think that it was simply too controversial for network TV audiences and so was inevitably doomed to ignominious cancellation after only three episodes had aired. Would that it were so. The unlikely cartoon troika of God (the voice of James Garner: Divine Secrets … more…

Cold Feet: Pilot and Complete 1st Series (review)

Somebody save us, please, from “hip,” “sophisticated” dramas about overprivileged, self-absorbed yuppies whining about how miserable their lives are. Here, it’s whiny Brits whining about how they’re not having sex, or if they are having sex how they can’t get pregnant, or if they do have babies how they can’t find a nanny, and would … more…

The Corporation (review)

Corporations on the Couch Did you know there were water riots in Bolivia in early 2000? Poor urban Bolivians actually took to the streets over water… not because there wasn’t enough to go around but because the American construction and engineering firm Bechtel had taken over the country’s privatized water infrastructure, including — and here’s … more…

The Yes Men, Super Size Me, Orwell Rolls in His Grave, Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism, Uncovered: The War on Iraq, Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire, and Control Room (review)

The year 2004 produced more than a handful of angry liberal documentaries — editorials, really, with far more partisan and obvious points of view than your typical newsy flick. Whether by accident or design, these films are countering the balance that has been one-sidedly weighed down by a supposedly liberal mainstream news media that is more interested in toeing the lines of their corporate masters and in catering to an audience it perceives as ignorant and willing to stay that way than in attempting to explain what’s really happening in the world. Much of what these films cover will be shocking to those who believe themselves well informed by watching network or cable news.

White Noise and Fear X (review)

The Insignificance of Static Set yourself in front of your VCR and rewind tapes for an hour and a half while your TV is tuned to a dead channel. There: You’ve just saved yourself the price of admission to White Noise, a limp attempt at scaring you with electronic static that’s about as frightening as … more…

The Sea Inside (review)

I’ve never seen a sadder smile on a human being than Javier Bardem musters as Ramón Sampedro, a man who has “learned to cry” with that smile. In an extraordinary performance, this physically robust and bracingly brawny actor physically shrinks down into the body of a man paralyzed below the neck, bedridden for decades, who … more…

Hitler’s Hit Parade (review)

It’s a neverending springtime for Hitler and Germany in this ironic and mesmerizing 76-minute distillation of the self-delusion of an entire nation. German documentarians Oliver Axer and Susanne Benze have gathered together startling counterpoints to the images of the era we’re used to seeing: instead of dismal, grainy, colorless footage of goose-stepping stormtroopers and flag-waving … more…

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town, The Year Without a Santa Claus, Rudolph’s Shiny New Year (review)

Are they puppets? Are they some sort of clay-animated figures? Or are they some kind of beasts hitherto unknown and the likes of which the world has not seen again since? It doesn’t matter. The creatures Rankin & Bass brought to life in their animated holiday specials are so much a part of my psyche that I no more think about their nature than I pause to consider what constitutes the air I breathe.

The Aviator and Beyond the Sea (review)

There’s a scene in *The Aviator* and one in *Beyond the Sea* that exemplifies how each film approaches its biographical subject, how very different those approaches are, and why both films are so equally entertaining nevertheless.
