Behold the Generic Fantasy Movie Trailer! What’s the movie about? Who knows? Who cares? It’s got dragons and talking mice and lions who can do magic and minotaurs with working-class accents and cute kids having adventures and some more dragons. And it’s in 3D!
With Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Baz Luhrmann onboard at this point, is it worth giving this movie a chance, at least until we start seeing terrible trailers? Or should some novels simply be written off as unfilmmable?
I’m almost entirely sure that no one who has not read The Deathly Hallows will be able to grasp what’s going on. The film is damn nigh impenetrable without the background of the novel, and all the previous novels in the series. It was almost impenetrable to me, who has read all the books, at least on an emotional level.
