It’s been a long time since I had to stifle the urge to shout, “No no NO!” at a movie screen in order to ensure that everything turned out okay in the end.
First thing the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes made me think? (Okay, second thing, after ‘Sexiest Holmes evah!’) ‘I have got to see Young Sherlock Holmes again.’
Surprisingly thoughtful — yet not quite thoughtful enough…
The metallic tang of blood is all over the elegant facade of this mysteriously disappointing, dispassionately underpowered story of a British aristocrat who dances with the devil, in the form of a werewolf curse, in the pale moonlight.
Forget all that nonsense about fending off evil spirits with Bibles and holy water and garlic or whatever. Automatic weapons is what you need.
It’s the perfect, ultimate, brilliant extrapolation of the vampire conceit: What happens once almost everyone’s a vampire, unturned humans are nearly extinct, and the tastiest, most satisfying blood — the human kind — is running out?
‘Ninja assassin.’ It’s like ‘monster trucks’ and ‘automatic weapons’ and ‘zombie Nazis’: you take two great things that are awesome separately, and then you put ’em together and it becomes like totally mindblowing, dude. Oh not.
There is no ‘archival footage’ of these sessions upon which *The Fourth Kind* was based. None of the ‘archival footage’ we see here, as terrifyingly plausible as it is, is real. Seriously. I promise you.
