curated cinema: two great movies by Rob Reiner
Watch 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap and 1987’s The Princess Bride and be reminded why Reiner was a gentle genius.

I’m obsessed with this British miniseries following one family through a dystopian 2020s. It’s completely harrowing, very nearly soul-crushing. Yet I cling to its tenuous optimism and profound beauty.

Hilarious satire about rebooting religion with a goddess in charge this time. A little bit Douglas Adams, a little bit Terry Gilliam, a whole lot irreverent.

Oh, I love this. Not just the wonderfulness of this episode, but that I can unreservedly love a Doctor Who again. That feels so good.
I would choose The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams. It remains hilarious every time I read it…
This is a wonderful episode: creepy, poignant, scary, funny. This is what Doctor Who can do that no other show can: be this surreal and this grounded at the same time.
Your geekgasm for today.
Thank you. Thank you so much, Neil Gaiman. Like I need this achy void in my gut on a Sunday afternoon. Like I need to be all weepy over a police box and a crazy lonely Time Lord.
