VS Naipaul isn’t just a sexist pig, he’s blindered to his own privilege

Gotta love what author V.S. Naipaul thinks of women writers: they’re none of them his equal because of their “narrow” perspective…

question of the day: Should there be a retirement age for artists?

Thu, Mar 31, 2011

Who could possibly make such a decision about when to retire accept an artist herself? Is there any way to mandate a retirement age for artists except by audiences refusing to participate as audiences anymore (which still wouldn’t prevent an artist from making art, only from having it seen)?

Hoorah! The human spirit triumphs! No mention of all the dead marine life of the Gulf of Mexico and the destroyed economies of the Gulf Coast states. Such a downer!

I might pick the end of The Usual Suspects. Or the “you’re getting on that plane” bit in Casablanca. Or… Well, there’s a lot of them, probably. It would be tough to pick a single one…

Wed, Feb 23, 2011

It’s a sad day in Doctor Who fandom: actor Nicholas Courtney, who played the beloved character Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, has died. UNIT commander Lethbridge-Stewart was one of the show’s most iconic characters, and Courtney was the longest-running actor in the show’s history…

first look at the ‘Doctor Who’ Experience… and I got my ticket

Oh yes: I’ve got my ticket. The BBC ignored my query about a press preview. Or maybe they’re not having a press preview. Either way, I’ll attend on Monday, and report soonest afterward about how totally freakin’ cool it is. Or isn’t.
