Shockingly not terrible, and says some things that need to be said more often, like how dads do not own their teenaged daughters…
There’s solid workmanship and an authentic emotional muscle in this movie. I was startled to find myself overwhelmed, eventually, by its ragged charms and its rough-edged vision of female power and pain.
The title makes me think of WristStrong, Stephen Colbert’s parody charity movement against wrist violence… and what we know about the film so far seems to imply that being country strong means taking strength from jealousy and substance abuse.
First-time writer-director Shana Feste has made a wise, insightful movie about family, grief, and how awful and how wonderful it is to discover that life goes on after someone you love dies.
