the oh-yes! DVD of the week: ‘The Devil's Whore’
This tasty treat, just released in Region 2, is wending its way to me from across the pond as we speak. Oh, do I love my region-free DVD player, which gives me freedom from my own impatience -- I don’t have to wait for this to be released in Region 1, which might not happen for years. For not only can I not resist a historical costume action drama with a title like The Devil’s Whore, I cannot resist anything starring John Simm. *sigh*
Of course, had I truly been incapable of coping with my own impatience, I would have already watched the files I downloaded months ago, but they’re still sitting on my hard drive virtually unseen...

Definitely worth watching -- well done (though the story felt a bit rushed in a few places; supposedly the series was originally supposed to be longer) and has the always welcome bonus of sexy!tortured John Simm. I basically swallowed the thing whole last weekend while frogging the current knitting project and casting on again.

Is it based on the book about the medieval witch hunt called "The devil's whores"?

I've been so waiting for this. Should be arriving in a couple of days. Now if only they would release the short Devilwood...

John Simm's character in this is called Edward Sexby. Further comment unnecessary?

No, the mini series is about the English Civil War, a subject that has been woefully underused over the years.
American's might be interested in the portrayal of "Freeborn John" Lilburn as many of his ideals from the Civil War were taken to America with the Quakers and greatly influenced US constitution.

is this referring to the "hexenhammer"/"malleus maleficarum", a book somewhat like a guideline for making out witches, written by the monk heinrich kramer?
anyway, the title of the series is based on a quote made by martin luther who declared "reason is the devil's greatest whore." Erlangen Edition v. 16, pp. 142-148
