‘Doctor Who’ thing of the day: awesome extras on the first Matt Smith DVD set

Geoff Boucher at Hero Complex has the exclusive! OMG!

I just got word that the BBC is poised to announce that "Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series" will hit Blu-ray and DVD on November 9 and that it will contain a truly tantalizing extra: two newly filmed sequences, both written by Steven Moffat and available only in this collection.

They are called "Meanwhile, in the TARDIS ... " and, as that title suggests, they are drop-in moments that show what happens between the episodes -- I suspect they're the comedy mortar between the story bricks, and with Moffat's wry sensibility and the daft charms of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, I'm guessing these interstitial escapades have a chance to be pretty entertaining.

That November 9th date is most likely for Region 1; the Region 2 date probably won’t be too much earlier than that, if at all.

Of course, you can already buy some of the Matt Smith debut season on Region 2 DVD, though these discs don’t have the “Meanwhile” material. Buy Volume 1 and Volume 2; preorder Volume 3 (out August 2) and Volume 4 (out September 6). These typically are pretty bare-bones: a couple of episodes and maybe one bonus, but not all the stuff that will eventually be on the complete season box set.

MaryAnn, just went to TVShowsOnDvd.com, and they have posted the 11/9 date for the 5th Series DVD set in region 1. They also quote the LA Times article.

I remember the fourth series came out on 11/18/08 in North America so it's not out of the realm on possiblity that the 11/9 date is indeed the region 1 date.

Like I wasn't already going to buy it the day it comes out...

I find that I have been buying more & more the Region 2 Dr. Who DVDs. Even with the exchange rate & S&H, they tend to be cheaper than the ones here, they come out earlier than here and they aren't edited, as "The Chase" and "Planet of Fire" are over here.

I did break down and buy the Season 1 Volume 1 DVD and while the extras are pretty sparse, it does include a sampler for one of the new original Dr. Who novels, which I quite enjoyed.

I just read this! Sunds cool and worth buying the disc for.

that's a blu ray box set

I've also been starting to get the Region 2 Doctor Who's whenever I hear the word edited for Region 1 (the only reason I've actually stuck with Region 1 is because the artwork is nicer). The Blu-ray is a tricky wicket though since there are issues with my tv viewing them specifically from 2entertain / BBC video so I stick with Region 1 for them. As for Series 5 - it's get here when it gets here. I believe the titles are suppose to be a bit different and the next... promos at the end of each episode are adios.

I've also been starting to get the Region 2 Doctor Who's whenever I hear the word edited for Region 1

So far, the Region 1 sets have been identical in content to the Region 2 sets. (When the episodes aired on Sci Fi, they were edited for cablecast, but the Region 1 DVDs have included unedited episodes.) I don't see why that should suddenly change.

The Region 2 sets have been *much* cheaper, however, even when you add in overseas shipping (which is a lot less than you'd think).

Blogtor Who has more details on it. Saying the dvd costs £70 and the blu-ray is £80. 70 english pounds! for 13 episodes! Hope Amazon knocks it down a bit.

Here's a Dr. Who Thing of the day submission for you:

Of course, anime is unable to capture emotion, so whatever.

Whoops, double-post; already threw that on the other DWTOTD post.
