There’s an appealing sort of crazy, on the surface, to Freakonomics — the theory, the book, and now the documentary. But it seems for all the world as if Freakonomics the movie is mocking Freakonomics the theory. Did they mean to do that?

I know that dramatic change like this can be traumatic — I’m getting stressed out dealing with the Internet Movie Database’s reorganization and redesign, but I can appreciate that the changes there are for the better and that I will get used to them in time. Shia LaBeouf has put himself, in recent years, in a place where the Shia LaBeouf Experience is one of big loud dumb noises in which he runs around yelling. A lot. This is what Hollywood has trained us to accept from LaBeouf, and it’s not exactly the best place for a serious actor to find himself. Not if he wants to be taken seriously.
