question of the day: Do you feel left out if you don’t see a big movie on opening weekend?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides may not have broken any records for the franchise or in terms of overall box office, but it still managed to bust through as the biggest opener of 2011, earning more than $90 million (estimated at this point) in North America. (Overseas numbers will come in later in the week.) A lot of people saw this movie this weekend, and a lot of people will be talking about it, online and off.

We’re entering the summer season of huge blockbusters — or, at least, the films the studios hope will be huge blockbusters. They want to get you into a multiplex on opening weekend, but sometimes you want to get yourself there, too: to be among the first to see a film, to be able to talk about it while the conversation is hot. Or maybe you don’t care, and are happy to wait till the initial hype is over and a film can be seen on more level terms.

Do you feel left out if you don’t see a big movie on opening weekend?

If you don’t head out opening weekend, when do you make it a point to see a big new film: a few weeks later? not till DVD? never?
