question of the weekend: How long will it be before gay marriage is taken for granted?

New York State last night did something wonderful: its senate passed a gay-marriage bill, and Governor Andrew Cuomo signed it. All my gay friends in NYC are now free to be as miserable as my straight friends by getting hitched to someone totally wrong for them. Surely it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing Gay Groomzilla reality shows on the three-digit cable channels.

Still, such things would definitely be progress. New York is only the sixth state in the U.S. to legalize gay marriage. Gay marriage — or, as NYS legislators framed it, marriage equality (taking the icky G-word out of the process surely helped) — is legal in only a few places around the world.

Simple question, but one that’s tough to answer:

How long will it be before gay marriage is taken for granted?

I can’t believe we’re still yelling about this stuff. I’ve always figured that there surely cannot be so much love in the world that we need to outlaw some of it. But many people harbor bizarre fears of… I dunno what. And apparently they’re not easy fears to overcome.
