question of the weekend: If you had your druthers, what would your eating patterns be?

Most of us grow up with the idea that the right way to eat is three square meals a day. But there’s nothing natural about that. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors almost certainly feasted some days and made that their only meal, and went hungry some days when food was scarce, and probably, on most days, grazed all day long when something tasty came into view. The way we eat today is almost certainly a remnant of the Industrial Revolution, when the rhythms of daily living for most people became subject to rigid working shifts.
Many of us are still stuck with those rhythms. Some of us are lucky enough to break free of that, at least sometimes.

If you had your druthers, what would your eating patterns be?

Me, I’d prefer to have a big breakfast late in the morning, and then a late lunch or early dinner, and that does me just fine. It fits in particularly well with my working schedule, which often has me at press screenings in the early evening: it’s too late afterward to have a big meal. Unless I could stay up till 3am… which my natural sleep cycles would probably allow me to do, if I could adhere to them, too, and not get up till 11am the next day.

You?
