how are you celebrating Free Comic Book Day?

Free Comic Book Day is always the first Saturday in May, which means it’s today. What’s it about?

How are you celebrating Free Comic Book Day? Are you trying comics for the first time? Are you checking out a title you hadn’t previously been buying? If you’re not into comics, what other creative field do you wish had its equivalent to Free Comic Book Day?

My usual “sleep too late, end up getting whatever they have left.” Which happily means I get all the oddments and surprises.

Enjoying the first sunny weekend in a long time. Fish and Chips on the patio at a local restaurant, with a nice pint of bitter.
(The nearest comic shop is a 45 minute drive away, and I don’t have a car)

I wore a Batman t-shirt and visited a comic book store on Gunn Hwy in Tampa. They had taken over half the parking lot and had guest artists under tents. I got a picture of a dancing Stormtrooper and got to pose with a Iron Woman and Spidey.

My friends just had a baby yesterday on (not at) Free Comic Book Day. This new kid’s parent’s are the coolest of geeks. I’m mean how neat will it be for him growing up to have been born on Free Comic Book Day *and* on May 4th (Star Wars Day).

We spent yesterday presiding over FCBD at our store, handing out 44 titles (and one Heroclix) to several hundred people. We’ve got a very long store with the FCBD table(s) set near the back, yet the line ran out through the front doors and into the parking lot. The odd stuff that we only order a few dozen of, for instance the two Steampunk comics, tended to go quickly, within the first 15 minutes. I always pre-pull a couple of each title to accommodate the latecomer who is desperate to find any single title, and that happened ten times, so I have ten new best friends. ;)

In addition to showing our customers how much we value them, we made 4X what we laid out for the comics and Heroclix, plus we saw a lot of new people (who loved our store!), so the work and money were definitely worth it. We got 2 new subscribers! We sold four Man of Steel statues! We sold a ton of back issues!

Then, exhausted, we all went out and had a drink and some dinner at a tavern. FCBD pictures will be posted as soon as everybody emails me the shots they took.
