Perhaps it’s a reference to the Hunting of the Wren, on Christmas Day or St Stephen’s Day.
Ah, yes, perhaps that’s it.
Or maybe the partridge escaped from the pear tree…
They’re Robins. Often spotted in gardens this time of year and are traditionally linked to Christmas (mostly through the greeting card industry but also from a folk tale about the red breast.)
You probably don’t recognise them as you’re used to the miscatorgorised and far uglier American robin.
