BASIC REPRESENTATION SCORE: 0

FEMALE AGENCY/POWER/AUTHORITY SCORE: 0

[no significant representation of women in authority]

THE MALE GAZE SCORE: 0

[no issues]

GENDER/SEXUALITY SCORE: -8

-5
Is there a female character who is primarily defined by her emotional and/or sexual relationship with a man or men? [why this matters]
-3
Is a dead mother mentioned? [why this matters]

WILDCARD SCORE: -5

Is there anything either positive or negative in the film’s representation of women not already accounted for here? (points will vary)

Women and girls appear in this movie only vanishingly briefly, and then only as pawns in a violent game men are playing. Women and girls exist here solely as the property of men, and then only to be insulted or threatened as a way to hurt their male owner, not for any pain it might cause a woman in her own right.

TOTAL SCORE: -13

IS THE FILM’S DIRECTOR FEMALE? No (does not impact scoring)

IS THE FILM’S SCREENWRITER FEMALE? No (does not impact scoring)

BOTTOM LINE: Women do not figure into this testosterone fest, except as the object of sexual jokes (mostly to insult the men they belong to) or as familial property that can be threatened to motivate a man. The first appearance by a woman here is only her implied presence in a joke about “titty fucking”… which also serves to insult her as both stupid and fat. It doesn’t get much better from there.

NOTE: This is not a “review” of Run All Night! It is simply an examination of how well or how poorly it represents women. (A movie that represents women well can still be a terrible film; a movie that represents women poorly can still be a great film.) Read my review of Run All Night.

I suppose it’s better than wallpapering the room with hookers, randomly setting scenes in strip clubs, and so on.
