question of the day: What can we hope for from the just-greenlit ‘MacGyver’ movie?

The hypothetical MacGyver movie we fantasized about four months ago here is actually coming to fruition, according to CBC News:

A big screen version of the long-running TV series MacGyver is in the works by New Line studio.

“We think we’re a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise,” Richard Brener of New Line told The Hollywood Reporter.

Raffaella De Laurentiis and her father, Dino, will produce the film.

No cast or director is attached to the project yet.

Now, De Laurentiis’s credits as a producer are not inspiring: there’s an awful lot of crap there. I fear that a MacGyver movie she produces is gonna look like a made-for-Sci Fi — excuse me, Syfy — Saturday night movie.

What do you think? What can we hope for from the just-greenlit MacGyver movie?

If it means more Richard Dean Anderson, why not … I miss him since he left Stargate SG1
I hope in the movie there will be a cross reference with Stargate, it could be lot of fun !!!!

It depends on if this is a continuation (Richard Dean Anderson) or a reboot (Christian Bale, again).

It depends on if Murdoc is the nemesis.

it depends on the director: there’s a difference between a Martin Scorsese and a Martin Campbell.

It depends on the script: the one I sent in I admit relies a lot on exploding penguins, but cmon, EXPLODING PENGUINS ARE AWESOME…

Mac was my first TV boyfriend. I hope they don’t mess it up.

MacGyver is about making ordinary items and basic scientific principles effective and cool through intelligence. They shouldn’t need to gussy that up. Anything featured on that Kid Scientists segment on Letterman, if applied creatively, will do.

@ PaulW
Is it wrong that I am sitting here thinking “yeah, Christian Bale would make a kickass MacGyver”?

Nathan Fillion. Nathan Fillion is the kick-ass new MacGyver for the 21st century.

We gotta get RDA in there somewhere, though…

Yeah, it might work if they bring Richard Dean Anderson back… but this is ultimate cheese TV; I can’t even watch it anymore and I was in LOVE with MacGyver all through my teens.

Bring Teri Hatcher and Cuba Gooding, Jr. back too and I’ll consider seeing the film. But man… I have nothing but trepidation for this.
