“Why aren’t people shocked or something? Why aren’t people up in arms?”

Um, sorry, but people aren’t either shocked or up in arms because Obama IS NOT A COMMUNIST! We see in this video the power of ideology over common sense. Anyone with a dictionary can find out what “communism” means, and anyone with common sense can see that no one in the White House is doing anything like communism. So those who believe this to be true are getting their news from Fox News which pushes this concept. As always, those who watch Fox are the least informed of all Americans. Most Americans don’t release videos of themselves demonstrating their ignorance however.

Since this is a movie site, let me use a quote from The Princess Bride: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Crazy lady. He’s not a communist. He’s a socialist. And a lot of people are pissed at him. The mainstream media are just too busy kissing his butt to notice.

Sadly, some people do not know the meaning of the word “socialism” either.

Ah, the Big Lie. Worked for Hitler, works for Fox News and the like.

Yeah, I Godwined the thread.

Pollas, Obama’s not a socialist, either. Your claim that he is proves only that you are a totally unreliable observer.

But thank you for playing.

Will socialized health-care enable her to get help for those various ailments she lists in that delightful little ditty (anxiety, sleep deprivation, flushes, various OCDs, shaking, an inability to write meter and sing – I’d like to see House’s take on those symptoms)? I sure hope so, it sounds serious.

Also – the ‘other guy’ was Engels and ‘spread the wealth’ is not a direct quote from the Communist Manifesto, no matter how many air-quotes you put around it. People who do ‘read history’ know this things, they also know the definition of ‘socialism’ and ‘communism’.

Sometimes I read right wing attacks on Obama and think to myself, “If only it were true.”

Jeez, I remember this woman. She was once a comedian on SNL and she was in the movie, “Casual Sex” with Lea Thompson back in the 80s. Sorry to see this. It’s painful.

Just want to say that that is one of the most Useful Quotes Ever. (Another one I’ve seen on a couple of blog posts: “Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up.”)

Long live The Princess Bride.

Let’s all sing it together ” There’s a brain dead bimbo singing on You Tube”…. who actually believes anything she hears on Fox News.

“I don’t care about the leaders and the theories…”

Sometimes I read right wing attacks on Obama and think to myself, “If only it were true.”

Be careful what you wish for. If all that were really true, washed-up celebrities like Victoria Jackson would be the least of our problems.

Then again “so-and-so is a Communist” is such a familiar meme I’m surprised conservatives still treat it like a valid political argument. In a way, the word is like “racist” or “anti-intellectual.” It gets used so often as a synonym for “person who disagrees with me,” if not “person whose political opinions I don’t care for” that it has lost almost all the power of its original connotation.

I’m old enough to remember what some of my classmates in junior high referred to Joan Baez as a Communist. People far older than me undoubtedly remember a time when it was used against the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Having once worked with and/or dated refugees from Communist countries, I don’t consider Marxism a laughing matter. But it does no credit to the people who have suffered under Communist tyranny to keep using the “C” word in such an offhand manner as Ms. Jackson does.

It could been argued that Obama is a “Communist” in the same sense Bush was a “Fascist.” (And no doubt, at this moment, some German refugee in Argentina is objecting to the idea of GWB being a Fascist…)

Tonio: Yeah, I consider myself a democratic socialist in the northern european sense, rather than a communist in the soviet/maoist sense. I believe that economic and political power tend to concentrate and become dangerous, and needs to be mitigated for the good of society.

To date the best system seems to be a robust parliamentary democracy with a constitutional restrictions in individual freedoms, and a combination of regulation and socialist public corporations to prevent market-driven abuses.

Compared with that, Obama strikes me as a mildly liberal career politician. He’s willing to propose legislation that undoes the Bush-era re-concentration of wealth, damage to civil liberties, and the decades long decline of the healthcare system, but he’s also either willing or unable to resist being steamrolled by the radical right on these issues.

He appears to be willing to propose things that, by a huge stretch of the imagination, which be said to be these things, and then only because he knows there’s no way in hell they’ll actually ever come to pass.

@Tonio: Hence the use of the word “Sometimes.”

But when I listen to the left wing, they want America to be more like Canada.

When I listen to the Bush wing of the GOP, they want us to be more like Saudi Arabia.

When I watch the Cheney wing of the GOP, they want us to be more like China (the reality of China, not the ideology of China).

I know which future I’d prefer.

So far, the Obama Administration has only been slightly more liberal than Bush’s Administration. In fact, in someways, he represents just a more pleasant face to the American Empire as he has continued and even deepened some of Bush’s most outrageous policies.

As for Victoria Jackson, didn’t she always play a slightly ditzy dingbat in SNL? And the Princess Bride quote is remarkable prescient about how the teabaggers are using the term “socialism” when Obama is perhaps the most conservative Democrat in recent memory.
