[I]t’s been confirmed that a pair of new characters are joining Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen this time round. They are Rex Matheson, a CIA agent, and Ester Katusi, who will be playing an analyst. We’ve no idea yet who’s going to be playing either of them, but, rest assured, we’ll be submitting our showreel.

It’s also been revealed that helping on the writing side of things will be John Shiban, Jane Espenson and Doris Egan. Shiban is a veteran of The X-Files, and has the likes of Star Trek: Enterprise and Breaking Bad on his resume. Espenson, meanwhile, has the likes of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica and Buffy The Vampire Slayer to her name. Egan, meanwhile, has penned episodes of Dark Angel and Tru Calling.
I’m so not a fan of Tru Calling, but I’m excited about Espenson coming onboard. It gives me hope that Torchwood is not going to be Americanized… just as BSG and Caprica don’t feel particularly Hollywood.

Torchwood [the institution, that is, not the show] is “like a legend now,” [Russell T.] Davies told reporters at the recent Television Critics Association summer press tour, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s like something that’s ceased to exist, and is now spoken of only in whispers.”

“We definitely have a really big story to tell,” executive producer Julie Gardner said. Gardner was a key part of the past three “Torchwood” seasons, and left “Doctor Who” with Davies following David Tennant’s finale specials. “It’s absolutely rebooted to welcome a new audience.”
Although Gardner talked about a reboot, sources re-assure Airlock Alpha that canon will remain intact, and that the fourth season is indeed a continuation of the events in the previous three seasons. Gardner’s choice of the word “reboot” is more about how the story is told, and less about the story itself.

can i make a quiet sort of “squee” while reserving a bit of “hmmmm”? i want to know what about Alonzo? the Doctor introduces them, and waltzes (well swans off) and what’s happening there?
Massive, Earth-shaking squee. Especially with Jane Espenson on board. We know she can do dark (BSG and Caprica) and she can do funny (Firefly, Buffy). I forgive her for Warehouse 13.
Just having Mr. Barrowman back on our US screens is reason enough to squee, but the fact that Doris Egan, one of my all time favorite HOUSE writers is in the mix, makes this absolute Must See TV.
They are soooooooooooooo lucky to have Jane Espenson – she’s brilliant.

I guess Owen and Tosh really aren’t going to magically come back, huh? Not to mention Ianto? Guess I should give up on that?

I love the idea of Torchwood being legendary in the post-Children of Earth era on the planet. Sort of like if the Year That Never Was at the end of Season 3 of Doctor Who (the one where the Master ruled and Martha spread the word of the Doctor) still existed and the Doctor had become legend instead of this amorphous man who is occasionally referenced in the press and by the powerful.
Oh I defnitely squeed when I heard that Jane Espenson was going to be writing – I love almost all of what she’s done. BSG, Firefly and Buffy are pretty much my all-time favourite TV shows, so I can’t see her doing anything horrible to Torchwood.
Meh. I’m not a Buffy or Firefly fan by any means, so that doesn’t catch me. On of the reasons I liked Torchwood was that it was based in Cardiff, and it wasn’t in a place that we’ve seen a million times over. I desperately hope they don’t go to New York or L.A. or any kind of big city in the States. I gave up on a lot of U.S. shows because they were so boring and repetitive with their location, so I hope Torchwood doesn’t fall into this trap. Until I hear anything more, I’m on the fence about it.

Gotta agree with you kassia (thou I adored Buffy). I’m also tired of the same old locations being used in US shows. There are 50 states but only a few cities get focus. Anyway, I’ll keep an open mind with the next series thou I am still leery that it will become to Americanized even with the writers on board. Hopefully if it’s successfully they’ll keep the cast instead of killing them off each series (still miss Ianto).

In any case, I’ll squee. Mostly for Jane Espenson who is brilliant. Plus Children of Earth was fantastic so if their pitch for The New World is “like COE but twice as long” then I’m in.
Though let’s hold off on killing the main characters please? Sigh, Ianto…
RyanT, even Russell Tovey who played Alonzo hasn’t heard a peep about appearing on the show (at least at the UK site I go to regularly – DigitalSpy). Even so, he does have Being Human to film so it could clash as to when they tape TW.
Doris Egan also writes fab science fiction. Y’know, of the book variety.
I think Doris Egan is ready for a change. House, sadly, has jumped the shark, but it had started off so well!
