For a film critic, there are few pleasures more satisfying than ripping into a bad movie. But one of those few is discovering that a film that you were expecting to hate — a movie that you had no doubts whatsoever would turn out to be utterly awful — turns out to be wonderful.
I’m starting to worry that Andrew Niccol has already said, with Gattaca and The Truman Show, all he has to say.
A soulless CGI-animated remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Without a Harrison Ford to smirk and snark his way through it, natch.
This is a ridiculous movie. And yet, I enjoyed the hell out it. Not just because Hugh Jackman is in it. In IMAX. Though that doesn’t hurt.
It is leaden where it should be light. It is graceless and charmless. It reels from the painful banter. It is the epitome of empty soulless corporate filmmaking.
Shockingly, this is the rare sequel that improves on the original. Granted, that wasn’t hard, in this case, but neither is saying this damning with faint praise.

I’m so excited cuz it’s like Taylor Lautner made a movie just for Team Jacob! Except he’s not a werewolf or anything silly or fantasy like that — he’s a real teenager with real problems. Like being the secret child of top international spies.
Remember Drive Angry? (I hope you don’t.) This is not that movie. This is Drive Calm. This is Drive Cool.
It’s entirely possible that nothing that happens after the first twenty minutes or so is taking place anywhere outside the protagonist’s head. But that’s not a really satisfying out for what is an equally intriguing and frustrating cinematic experience…
